Where to Live If You Work at Redstone Arsenal
Most people who work at Redstone Arsenal look at three areas: south Huntsville, Madison and Hampton Cove. South Huntsville neighborhoods like Hays Farm and Jones Valley are among the closest. Madison is a popular middle choice. Hampton Cove gives you more space, with a longer drive. The best fit depends on which gate you use, what shift you work and what you can spend.
I am Donalta Hall with The Hall Team at eXp Realty. My husband Daniel is a Mortgage Specialist and REALTOR®, and he holds the Military Relocation Professional (MRP) certification. Here is how we help Redstone families choose.
Who works at Redstone Arsenal?
A lot of people. Military OneSource says about 45,500 people work there. That is nearly 900 active duty and reserve soldiers, about 27,300 civilians and just over 17,000 contractors. Organizations on the installation include Army Materiel Command, Army Aviation and Missile Command, the Missile Defense Agency and NASA Marshall Space Flight Center. Military OneSource also lists U.S. Space Command headquarters as relocated there as of late 2025.
So this guide is not only for soldiers. If you are a civilian or a contractor, the same questions apply to you.
Why does your gate matter more than the neighborhood name?
Because the arsenal has several gates, and they do not all work the same way. Gate 9 on Rideout Road is the main gate, and the Army lists it as open for vehicles around the clock. Other gates, on Martin Road, Redstone Road and Goss Road and Drake Avenue, have limited hours. Some are inbound only in the morning and outbound only in the afternoon.
Gate hours can change. In July 2026, Gate 3 on Redstone Road closed for a few days because of security staffing, then reopened with shorter hours. Always check the Redstone Arsenal garrison page for current gate hours before you choose a home. Ask your office which gate you will use every day.
Which Huntsville neighborhoods are closest?
Local guides list Hays Farm and Jones Valley among the shortest drives for Arsenal workers.
- Hays Farm is a master planned area in south Huntsville with shops and restaurants close to home.
- Jones Valley is an established area with mature trees and a quiet feel.
If a short drive matters most, start here. Homes close to the gates often cost more per square foot, so it helps to look at your budget first.
Is Madison a good choice for Redstone workers?
Yes, for many families. Madison sits in the middle on distance and is known for newer homes, parks and a strong school system. It is also one of the best places to find new construction, which many relocating families like because the home is new and the builder may offer incentives. Read our page on new construction in Huntsville and Madison to see how that works.
Your commute depends on the gate and the time of day. So test the drive before you decide.
What is Hampton Cove like?
Hampton Cove is a master planned community known for golf and larger lots. It usually means the longest drive of the three areas. Families choose it for space and a calm setting, and they accept a longer commute in return. If you work a flexible schedule, this can be a great fit.
How do you test a commute before you buy?
Do a real drive, not a map check. Here is what we ask our buyers to do:
- Drive from the home to your gate at the hour you will actually leave for work.
- Drive home at your normal quitting time.
- Check which gate is open at that hour, and what the backup gate is.
- Try the drive once on a rainy day if you can.
Ten minutes on a map can feel very different in real traffic. We can help you plan these test drives when you visit.
How does a military move change the way you buy?
It adds a few things to plan for. A Military Relocation Professional is a REALTOR® who has taken the National Association of REALTORS® MRP course. The course covers military relocation steps, VA financing basics and the choice between renting and buying. Daniel holds this certification, and he is also our Mortgage Specialist, so you can ask about VA loans and your budget in one place. Meet him on our mortgage page.
Your housing allowance matters too. Basic Allowance for Housing is set by rank, dependents and location, and it updates every January. As an example, one base guide lists the 2026 Huntsville rate for an E5 with dependents at $1,797 per month. Please check the official Defense Travel Management Office calculator for your own rate.
Can you rent before you buy?
Yes. If you arrive before you are ready to choose, Hall & Co Residences offers temporary and corporate housing. You can live here for a while, learn your drive and then shop without pressure. Start with our Huntsville relocation page.
