by Donalta Hall

If you want to live near trails in Huntsville, look at Monte Sano and Green Mountain. Monte Sano is a mountain neighborhood about 2 miles from downtown, with a large state park. Green Mountain is in south Huntsville, with a big nature preserve and a lake loop. Both let you get outside close to home.

I am Donalta Hall with The Hall Team at eXp Realty. Buyers moving here often ask where they can hike without driving far. Here is what each area offers, drawn from the Land Trust of North Alabama, state park and city tourism pages.

What is it like to live on Monte Sano?

Monte Sano rises above downtown Huntsville and is about 2 miles from it. The name means "Mountain of Health." In the 1800s it was a health resort. Later, German rocket scientists, including Wernher von Braun, were drawn to the area.

The downtown Huntsville district page describes homes here as everything from city view retreats to eclectic cottages on the mountain. If you want quiet streets and a mountain setting inside the city, this is the place to look.

What can you do at Monte Sano State Park?

Monte Sano State Park covers 2,140 acres on the northeast side of Huntsville. It offers more than 20 miles of hiking trails and miles of biking trails. There is also an 18 hole disc golf course, a campground and cabins. The Von Braun Astronomical Society runs an observatory and planetarium in the park.

The Civilian Conservation Corps built the park in the 1930s, and it opened in 1938. It has 14 cabins in the Arts and Crafts style.

Next to the park is the Land Trust of North Alabama's Monte Sano Nature Preserve. It has public trails, including the Three Caves Loop and the Wildflower Trail.

Is there anything else to do near Monte Sano?

Yes. Burritt on the Mountain is Huntsville's first museum. It is an outdoor historic park that shows life in the 1800s, with views from Baron Bluff. It also hosts weddings and events. Check current hours and events before you go.

What is Green Mountain like?

Green Mountain is in south Huntsville. Its main draw is outdoor space. The Land Trust of North Alabama's Green Mountain Nature Preserve covers 818 acres, in a North section and a South section.

  • The South section starts at the Alum Hollow Trailhead and has more than 5 miles of trails, from easy to hard.
  • The North section starts at the Riverview Trailhead and has a little over 3 miles of rocky trail.
  • The preserve has streams, waterfalls and Alum Cave, a rock shelter used in the Middle Woodland period.

What is the Madison County Nature Trail at Green Mountain?

It is a 72 acre park run by the Madison County Commission. A 1.5 mile loop circles 17 acre Sky Lake. The park has a covered bridge, an A frame chapel, an outdoor classroom, picnic areas and restrooms. It was built in the 1970s. Please check the county for current hours and any fees.

How can you compare both areas in one weekend?

Plan one trail day in each place. Start on Monte Sano with a walk on the Wildflower Trail or a visit to Burritt on the Mountain. On the next day, walk the loop around Sky Lake at Green Mountain or take the Alum Hollow Trailhead into the preserve. Pay attention to how long each trip takes from the homes you are touring. A trail that feels close on a map can feel different on a busy morning.

What should you ask before you buy near a trail?

A home near nature is wonderful, and it helps to ask a few plain questions first:

  • How far is the nearest trailhead from the home, and how do you get there?
  • How long is the drive to work, school and groceries from this street?
  • Is the lot sloped? Hills can change the cost of building, landscaping and repairs.
  • Are there parking or visitor limits on the street during busy weekends?

We help buyers ask these questions at every showing, so there are no surprises after you close.

Which one is right for you?

Choose Monte Sano if you want a mountain setting close to downtown and a state park nearby. Choose Green Mountain if you want preserve trails and a lake loop in south Huntsville. The best way to decide is to visit both. We can show you homes in each area and plan a day around a trail walk.
