Living in Downtown Huntsville, AL: Big Spring Park, the Von Braun Center and Lowe Mill

by Donalta Hall

Downtown Huntsville is the city's arts and entertainment center. It is built around Courthouse Square, Big Spring Park, the Von Braun Center and the Huntsville Museum of Art. Just west, Lowe Mill is a former cotton mill that is now a large arts center with more than 200 artists. If you like to be close to music, parks and events, these two areas are worth a look.

I am Donalta Hall with The Hall Team at eXp Realty. Here is what each area offers, based on city, tourism and venue pages.

What is downtown Huntsville known for?

Downtown Huntsville is part of the Quigley Arts and Entertainment District. The district covers the downtown core, including Courthouse Square, Big Spring Park, the Von Braun Center and the Huntsville Museum of Art.

Huntsville has five designated arts and entertainment districts: Quigley, Village of Providence, S.R. Butler Green and Stovehouse, MidCity, and Bridge Street. In these districts, people can carry alcoholic drinks outdoors in special cups. The rules and hours can change, so check them before you go.

What is Big Spring Park?

Big Spring Park covers 12.5 acres around the original Big Spring. It has a red Japanese bridge, Yoshino cherry trees and a Norwegian lighthouse from 1903. The Panoply Arts Festival is held here in late April.

It is a simple place to walk after dinner or on a weekend morning.

What is the Von Braun Center?

The Von Braun Center is at 700 Monroe Street SW. It has eight venues, including Propst Arena, Mars Music Hall, the Concert Hall and the Playhouse. It is home to the Huntsville Havoc hockey team and the Broadway Theatre League. It also has a restaurant and rooftop bar called Rhythm on Monroe. Check current teams, shows and hours before you plan a visit.

What is Lowe Mill?

Lowe Mill ARTS and Entertainment is at 2211 Seminole Drive SW in West Huntsville. It began as a cotton mill around 1900 and closed in 1937. From 1945 to 1978 it was a Genesco shoe factory. It reopened as an arts center in 2006.

Today it covers 190,000 square feet on 12 acres. It has 153 studios and more than 200 artists, plus galleries, performance spaces and free Friday night concerts on the dock, called Concerts on the Dock. Tenants and events change, so check the Lowe Mill site before you visit.

How can you spend a day exploring these areas?

Start in the morning at Big Spring Park, which is a calm place to walk. Spend the afternoon at Lowe Mill, where you can see studios and galleries. If something is on at the Von Braun Center, end the day with a show or a game. Check each website for current hours and events before you go. A day like this shows you quickly whether you want to live close to the action. Bring a notebook, and write down what you liked and what felt too busy. Those notes will help us narrow your search.

What should you ask before choosing a place near downtown?

Living near events is fun, and it comes with trade offs. Here are good questions to ask:

  • Where will you park, and is parking included with the home?
  • How busy does the street get on event nights?
  • How far is it to work, school and the places you visit every week?
  • Does the home have outdoor space that fits your life, such as a patio or a small yard?

We walk through these questions with every buyer, so you know what daily life will feel like before you decide.

Is downtown a good fit for you?

Downtown and West Huntsville suit people who like to be near events, art and public parks. They may not suit people who want a big yard or a very quiet street. The good news is that Huntsville has many other areas to compare, and we can help you do that.
